We’ll meet at on the front steps (facing the Mall) of the National Gallery of Art (west building). The west building is the gallery with the Greek columns. With the winter approaching, many organizations around D.C. need your help in feeding and housing the homeless. OCA-NOVA Service Corps is organizing a large group to participate in the annual Help the Homeless Walkathon—a relaxing stroll around the National Mall and Tidal Basin—on Saturday, Nov. 18th rain or shine. We'll meet at on the front steps (faces the Mall) of the National Gallery of Art (west building). The west building is the gallery with the Greek columns. With the winter approaching, many organizations around D.C. need your help in feeding and housing the homeless. OCA-NOVA service corp and OCA-YP are organizing a large group to participate in the annual Help the Homeless Walkathon—a 5K walk around the National Mall and Tidal Basin—on Saturday, Nov. 19th rain or shine. School Year 2004-2005 will be Asian American LEAD's first year offering a structured reading and math one-on-one tutoring program to children from Chinese immigrant/refugees background. With your help, AALEAD seeks to provide the children in our program with the tools and motivation necessary to read well and to excel in school. Also, this also allows for more flexibility in your schedule so that if you can not commit to tutoring every Saturday, you can come some of the Saturdays to test students. TESTER TRAINING: Thursday, October 6: 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. The time commitment for tutoring is approximately 3 hours every Saturday. 11-2 pm (2 hours tutoring and 1 hour lesson-planning). You will be contacted by phone to conduct a brief phone interview and to answer any questions you may have. The site for the tutoring program has not yet been finalized but is expected to be in Chinatown area. This event has been an enormous hit—among both volunteers and guests. Please bring a dish (appetizer, entrée, or dessert) or drink to share with our guests. The Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) helps these people by providing them with supplemental groceries. Each week, AFAC will distribute 1100 bags of groceries to over 900 clients. During the Thanksgiving season, the demand for this help is greater and AFAC's resources are more stressed. To help, OCA-NOVA Service Corps will be sorting food collected during the Boy Scouts'annual food drive. THE Asian Pacific American (APA) Service Corps is a program sponsored by the Organization of Chinese Americans, Northern Virginia Chapter (OCA-NOVA). Its primary goals are to: 1) provide a community service opportunity each and every month for volunteers, 2) promote the involvement of APAs in community service, and 3) enhance the perception of our community in mainstream America. This will be APA Service Corps' 88th consecutive month of service. ============================================================ ============== DATE: February 21, 1 p.m.-4 p.m. EVENT: BETHANY HOUSE for Battered Spouses and their Children LOCATION: Joseph's Coat 3022 Annandale Road, Falls Church, Virginia For the Valentine month, we scheduled our next service event to help those who have experienced and endured abusive relationships. For our next event, we will be at Bethany House on Saturday, February 21, 2004. Bethany House supplies temporary shelter and support services for abused spouses. As we were such hard working elves and did such a good job the last time we were at Bethany House, they have requested that we return soon. We have decided to return because they were so appreciative of our work and because we believe that we can contribute immensely to their mission. On the service event day, we are planning to pack and prepare for storage donations and supplies made to Bethany House. Please come on out and make a difference. Volunteers will assist at the Goodwill Store in several ways: greeting people as they arrive to drop off their donations, assisting donors in unloading their items, sorting donations, hanging and tagging clothing as well as hard goods, pulling dated merchandise from the sales floor and straightening shelves and racks of clothing. Goodwill can accommodate up to 15-20 people, so please invite your friends. The mission of Goodwill of Greater Washington is to educate, train, employ and place people with disabilities, as well as those with disadvantages, creating a stronger workforce and more vital community.
