This event has been an enormous hit—among both volunteers and guests. It's a great way to help the less fortunate while meeting new people in OCA. Please bring a dish (appetizer, entrée, or dessert) or beverages to share with our guests. The program also welcomes donations of toiletries, clean socks, and men’s underwear. We’ll start promptly at 10am and finish up by noon. Afterwards, we'll go for lunch somewhere in Bethesda – there are lots of restaurants are within walking distance. We’ll meet at on the front steps (facing the Mall) of the National Gallery of Art (west building). The west building is the gallery with the Greek columns. With the winter approaching, many organizations around D.C. need your help in feeding and housing the homeless. OCA-NOVA Service Corps is organizing a large group to participate in the annual Help the Homeless Walkathon—a relaxing stroll around the National Mall and Tidal Basin—on Saturday, Nov. 18th rain or shine. We had a large group of participants for the event the last couple of years. It's a terrific way to contribute to a good cause and to meet lots of new people as well. The Fiesta Asia event will feature an exciting array of attractions including an open-market, dance and martial arts performances by Asian Pacific American organizations, pan-Asian cuisine, and a manga design competition. For March, we're volunteering at Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary, a 400 acre non-profit refuge for farm animals and wildlife located in Poolesville, Maryland. Popular Spring Animal Sanctuary mission is to offer care, rehabilitation and permanent sanctuary for rescued farm animals, provide protect habitat for wildlife; furnish information to the public regarding farm animal and wildlife issues and promote compassion and humane treatment for all animals. The mission of the Goodwill is to educate, train, employ and place people with disabilities, as well as those with disadvantages, and thus creating a stronger workforce and a more vital community. The public donations to the Goodwill are used to help fund the employment, job training and placement services for its mission. Founded in 1973, OCA is a national organization dedicated to advancing the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans in the United States. ================================================================== =========== OCA-NOVA SC - Jan 22 and 28 - 3rd Annual Lunar New Year Celebration ====== DATE: Sunday, January 22, 2006 from 5pm-9pm & Saturday, January 28, 2006 from 11am-5pm EVENT: 3rd Annual Lunar New Year Celebration Event LOCATION: Fair Oaks Mall 11750 Fair Oaks Fairfax, VA 22033 With the Year of the Dog nipping at our heels, the OCA-NOVA service corps will be volunteering at the 3rd Annual Lunar New Year Celebration at Fair Oaks Mall on Sunday, January 22 and Saturday, January 28, 2006. The Lunar New Year Celebration (from January 28 & 29) will present cultural performances, exhibits, and demonstrations from different Asian organizations including, Chinese (of course), Indian, Indonesian, Korean, Malaysian, and Mongolian. Planned activities for Sunday volunteers include assembling the 100- feet long dragon display, hanging up the lanterns and displays, and laying out the decorations. On Saturday, volunteers will manage the crowd attending the performances, assist the groups in setting up their displays or preparing for their performances, help set-up and clean-up at stages, and provide information and help to the public. The Lunar New Year Celebration is sponsored by the Hai Hua Community Center (www.haihua.org), a non-profit and non-partisan organization that develops community services and educational programs for Asian- Americans and promotes Asian-Americans participation in civic affairs. Come out this month and help us welcome the Lunar New Year.
