Asian culture is deeply imbedded with many traditional festivals and celebrations. The Mid-Autumn Harvest Moon Festival, like Christmas and Thanksgiving in the US, is one of the most important traditional holidays in the Asian calendar year and it is a popular occasion for friends and family to renew old ties and make new ones. The festival celebrates the biggest and brightest full moon of the year, the harvest moon. The festival is on the 15th of the 8th lunar month or October 7th, 2006 for those more familiar with the Gregorian calendar. For the festival, friends and families gather together to watch the full moon rise, share and eat moon cakes, and sing moon poems – we’ll spare you from the latter. This custom dates back to the early Tang Dynasty (618 A.D). The moon cake, which is the culinary highlight of the Harvest Moon Festival, is a small round cake filled with red bean paste, fruits or jams. With a bright, full moon, fun friends, wonderful food and great tunes, you can't help but have fun. To we welcome the Fall season, we would like to invite you to celebrate the Harvest Moon Festival. We plan to meet at the Memorial and then go for a group walk around the Tidal Basin, under the beautiful full moon. Come join us for a festive and great nite together!! Quincy Street 1 block north of Fairfax Drive Virginia Square Metro Station (Orange Line) 703-228-5990 RSVP for planning purposes only by Friday, April 28, 2006 Email to ocanova_rsvp@yahoo.com Immigration is a hot topic that directly impacts the Chinese and Asian Pacific American (APA) community. Over two thirds of the APA community are first generation immigrants. To better understanding this issue facing us today, we must understand our history as well. Island Immigration Station illustrates the complicated intersections of race, class and the American immigrant identity. From 1910 to 1940 hundreds of thousands of immigrants crossed the Pacific Ocean and entered the U.S. at Angel Island. Due to discriminatory exclusion laws, these predominantly Asian immigrants endured intensive interrogations and lengthy detention. For years, the history of the Immigration Station lay buried. Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation (AIISF) has been working to bring the Angel Island story to national attention. New research has deepened our understanding of the site and the immigrants who were imprisoned within its walls. AIISF has tirelessly advocated for the preservation of the poetry and remaining structures on the former detention site and for the creation of a world-class visitor and genealogical research center—a $50 million project—that will ensure the story of Angel Island Immigration Station can be told for generations to come. Erika Gee, AIISF’s director of education will share about this story and the current efforts to preserve and interpret the historic structures. www.aiisf.org ================================================================== =========== OCA-NOVA and JACL Viewing of Citizen 13559: The Journal of Ben Uchida Families and Friends... Through a journal given to him by his father, Ben Uchida reflects on their troubled life in the barracks, his stern new schoolteacher, and the sometimes harsh reactions of other Americans. But key visits by the ghosts of his ancestors show Ben how family, humor, compassion, and even baseball and a telescope can help the human spirit endure in the most challenging of times in this compelling Kennedy Center co-commission from Scholastic Entertainment's popular My Name Is America book series. Recommended for ages 9 & up Morgan Stanley is the National Sponsor of Imagination Celebration®. New works are generously underwritten by the Li Ka Shing Foundation. I want to thank all the individuals who spent much of their time and efforts in trying to help the hurricane victims. Hurricane Katrina had caused massive destructions in the Gulf area and devastated the lives of hundreds of thousands of people, including thousands of Asian Americans. Such a disaster has impacted each and everyone of us. The original goal of this fundraiser was for the APA organizations to be united as a Community in response to this disaster. Even though many in our Community had already given to charity, and many still continue to give, with the current lower than expected individual attendance response due to prior work and travel committments, we feel that we will be unable to attain the goals we had set for this event. As such, we must make the difficult and disappointing decision of cancelling the October 23rd event. Everyone please remember, although the the media coverage has ended, the suffering has not. Please continue to help with what you can. Thanks!
